Pairing Wine & Movies Round 5: 2012 Penascal Estate Tempranillo Rose

Pairing Wine & Movies Round 5: 2012 Penascal Estate Tempranillo Rose

The first red wine that I actually enjoyed was a Spanish red while eating gourmet chocolates in Paris. Since then, I've noticed that my preference for Spanish reds has not changed. I seem to always like them best at tastings or getting a box from Club W, which if I'm being honest, hasn't happened in a while. There's something about the earthiness and spiciness that really appeals to me. When I was in the grocery store recently, I needed to pick up a rose for this round of wine and movie pairings. I already had a red and white planned out but I needed a rose to finish the trio. I was looking for an inexpensive bottle but I wanted to pick a good one too. When I happened on the Spanish region of the shelf, this Tempranillo Rose spoke to me. I just had a good feeling about it and it was $13. Not too bad. You also might notice that this round has movies that all star Cary Grant. This was more of an accident but turned out really well. Cary Grant is one of my favorite actors of all time and his resume has a wide selection of films that can each be paired uniquely with a glass of wine. If it were up to me, I'd pair up every single one of his movies but you guys might get sick of that. Do you have a favorite Cary Grant movie?

This 2012 Penascal Estate Tempranillo Rose was a perfect match for Charade with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. Audrey is another one of my favorite actors. I paired Breakfast at Tiffany's with one of the Xo, G Wines in a previous round. That's potentially my favorite movie of all time. Charade is definitely up there too. This film is a perfect mixture of wit and thrill. If you haven't seen it, Audrey Hepburn's character, Regina, is a recent widow who learns that her husband was leading a double life as a CIA agent but not a good one. Him and three other men stole thousands of dollars from the government and these three men think that Regina has it, only she doesn't know where the money is. Cary Grant's character, Peter Joshua, gets really close with Regina to earn her trust but is he a good guy or a bad guy? Regina finds herself in a web of lies and fake names without a real idea of who to trust.

The 2012 Penascal Estate Tempranillo Rose is made with 100% Temranillo grapes from an estate near Villaverde de Medina, Valladolid. This is a fruity rose with a strawberry red color bursting with ripe, red berry fruit aromas and redcurrant fruit flavors. It's recommended as an aperitif or with light dishes like salads, rice dishes, pasta or cheese. We actually had this alongside last week's Cooking With Stanley meal. I thought it paired perfectly. The dishes, as filling as they were, were really light in flavor. It was a great pairing. This was also a great pairing for Charade because it had a great balance, just like the film. Where Charade has a good mix of wit and thrill, the Tempranillo Rose has a good mix of fruit and spice. It has just enough sweetness to balance the earthy tones that are so unique to Spanish wines in general. I think that's why I favor them so strongly. This is easily one of my favorite roses that I have had.

Next week we'll have another Cary Grant movie and a very deep red wine. Remember to mention in the comments any movie or wine suggestions that you'd like to see paired.
