Pairing Wine & Movies Round 8: Massbach Winery Blushing Pink

Pairing Wine & Movies Round 8: Massbach Winery Blushing Pink

I recently took a trip to Galena that you will hear all about soon, but because of that trip the third pairing for round 8 of Wine & Movie Pairings got a tad delayed. As much as I love watching movies, they take a chunk of time and solo road trips make it hard to fit them in. I also needed a rose wine to finish off the trio which worked out perfectly because I happened to go wine shopping while I was in Galena. I know...there could be worse things. Anyway, I decided to pair a rose with the final movie starring Katharine Hepburn because this movie has Katharine's signature wit but also a little more drama to it. Stage Door featuring Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers is a film about wannabe Broadway actresses living in a boarding house trying to make it by. Ginger's character is a phenomenal dancer (duh) who seems to get along with the rest of the girls in the house. Katherine's character just arrived to the boarding house inquiring about a room and ends up as Ginger's roommate. She's the daughter of a very wealthy man who wants to be an actress even though her father does not agree. So instead of arguing, she leaves home and makes her own way. As soon as she enters the house, she changes the dynamic and mixes things up a bit. She's confronting managers and producers on behalf of her fellow roommates which is practically unheard of. She won't bow to anyone and she sticks to what she thinks is right, classic Hepburn. She ends up getting the lead role in a play that another one of the girls was supposed to get without realizing and it sadly leads to this girl taking her own life. It's this climactic scene that pushes Katharine's character over the edge to just feel the part rather than thinking about it too much and she becomes a sensation.

Massbach Ridge Winery is located in Elizabeth, IL just outside of Galena. It's all the way in the northwest corner of the state and about a three hour drive away from me. The Blushing Pink wine is cheeky and sweet. It's definitely a girly wine from the color to the label to the taste. You can smell peach, apple, flowers and pear. You taste raspberries and peach. It's sweet, kind of like a White Zinfandel. I think it paired really well with Stage Door because it wasn't too heavy of a wine nor was the movie too deep. It carried several life lessons and showcased women at their best and worst. They stuck together even though sometimes they couldn't stand each other. One of the women made a great point when she talked about how we have enough of a hard time out there. Why are we bringing each other down as well? This is a conversation we're still having today. Instead of a white wine which would have paired well with a light comedy, much like I did for The Philedelphia Story or a red wine that would have paired well with a darker movie or a movie with a more dramatic feel to it, like Look Who's Coming To Dinnerthis rose paired beautifully with a movie that fits perfectly in between. A little comedy and a little drama to even the scales.

So what do you think? Was this a good pairing? Have you had a wine from Massbach Ridge Winery before? Have you been to Galena?
