Chamonix, France

For a summer trip to the mountains, look no further than Chamonix. While this mountain resort region is known for its challenging slopes for winter sports, it offers even more during summer. Long warm days are great for a range of outdoor activities from hiking to white water rafting. Explore ice caves, paraglide while taking in magnificent views, or casually stroll through the city. Summertime in Chamonix slows down for a much more relaxed experience compared to the bustle and energy of winter. Indulge in French cuisine, soak up the sun while catching up on some reading, and simply enjoy “la bonne vie.”

Chicago, Illinois

There’s something to say about a Chicago summer. Most locals are resigned to rather than supportive of the harsh winters, so the city wakes up as soon as the weather turns warm. The lakefront comes alive as soon as the temperature is reasonably warm enough to brave a pair of shorts. Take an architecture cruise down the Chicago River, roam up the lakefront to some of the less crowded beaches like Montrose or Loyola, dine at any distinguished restaurants, and check to see if a festival is happening. Chicago is known for its summer festivals, from the famous Lollapalooza to lesser-known neighborhood treats like the Old Town Art Fair. Summer is the perfect time to explore outside the Loop and head into the neighborhoods. Patios come alive, pop-up events and sales litter the sidewalks, and more. You never know what you’re going to find during summer in Chicago.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

For a summer trip where wildlife and nature are the central theme, the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador are precisely what you’re looking for. While the Galapagos don’t have “cold” weather, the cool, dry season lasts from June to November. These months will have cooler temperatures from 68 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and less rain. The Galapagos Islands are a wildlife jackpot, home to nearly 9,000 species of wildlife (plants, animals, and marine), many of which are native to the islands. A few of the unique species include marine iguanas, giant tortoises, Darwin’s finches, blue-footed boobies, and Galapagos fur seals. The islands are among the most notable in the world for snorkeling and scuba diving, and an epicenter for natural history and science lovers.

Ibiza, Spain

Those looking for the ultimate party and nightlife scene, Ibiza is the spot. With some of the best DJ residencies, Ibiza is where everyone goes to party in the summertime. Catch weekly shows from names like David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Armin van Burren, Kygo, Ozuna, and more. Regardless of when your flight lands, there’s a show to see every night of the week. Aside from a packed music line-up and energetic nightlife, Ibiza is home to many beautiful beaches. Enjoy a quiet day in the sun, go for a hike, or explore Ibiza’s old town. There are several great markets, delicious local cuisine, and many options to take a boat out to sea. Ibiza was a destination before the party scene hit, and it will continue to be long after. Don’t count this Spanish gem out simply because you’d prefer to be in bed early.

Portland, Maine

For the ultimate New England summer vibe, it doesn’t get better than Portland, Maine. The northeastern city is famous for stunning coastal views, lobster rolls, and milder temperatures. While it will warm up just enough to enjoy the beach, the heat isn’t as oppressive as it can be farther south in the region, like Boston and New York City. Explore harbors, lighthouses, and unlimited outdoor fun from hiking to watersports, biking, and more. Indulge in fresh seafood, especially the state’s specialty – lobster rolls - artisan ice cream, fine dining, fresh oysters, craft cocktails, breweries, and more. Don’t miss the chance to go whale watching. May to October is the best time to see these magnificent creatures. Whether you’re visiting Portland for a weekend or a more extended getaway, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Tanzania & Zanzibar

July through October are the best months to visit Tanzania. It’s the height of the dry season, with shorter days making the weather much more tolerable. It’s also the Great Migration in the Serengeti, when herds of animals are moving from one location to another for the season. If a Safari is on your bucket list, this is the time to book a trip. When your safari trip comes to an end, keep the adventure going with a seaside escape in Zanzibar. Located off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar’s turquoise waters are breathtaking and the perfect relaxing escape after a whirlwind in the wild. A melting pot of cultures, Zanzibar offers a unique experience in everything from cuisine to architectural styles. Tour the spice farms, dive underwater to explore shipwrecks turned reefs, and walk through the historical Stone Town - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Indulge in Zanzibar’s cuisine, boasting influences from multiple cultures, including African, Arab, Indian, and European, particularly Portuguese. Native dishes are packed with flavor using warm spices that the island is known for growing.

Tirana, Albania

A lesser-known destination in the Balkans, Tirana is a quaint city filled with history. The Albanian city is budget-friendly, safe, and ideal for a quick trip while passing through the Balkan region. Most of the sites in the walkable town of Tirana can be seen in two short days, with lively nightlife providing a bit of excitement. Ruled by a strict communist regime for 40 years, Tirana was freed in 1991 and has since been dedicated to documenting its darker history. Bunk’Art 1 and 2, for example, are former underground bunkers that have been turned into museums that tell the history of the communist army, showcase what life looked like for the Albanian people during this time, and educate people on the history of the secret police. Aside from these unique museums, don’t miss Skanderberg Square, the Pyramid of Tyrana, and Et’hem Bey Mosque, a magnificent representation of Ottoman architecture with intricate frescoes. Speaking of the Ottomans, make sure to experience Albania’s coffee culture while visiting. Like Turkish Coffee, the tradition came from the Ottoman Empire and is a coveted part of Albanian culture.
