Where to Travel This Spring

Hey there, spring! She’s finally here, and if you live in the northern part of the continental US, nicer weather has been hard-earned. Spring break travel has often been geared towards families and college kids, but those of us child-free adults who made it through false spring three times over deserve a seasonal getaway, too! This article is dedicated to anyone who needs to get away from home for a bit (aka, everyone!). Pack a bag, and get ready for a little sunshine amidst the rainy days that spring brings. And don’t forget your sunscreen because that summer tan is long gone, my friends!

Barbados

It feels right to kick this list off with a tropical island, and why not Barbados?! One of the most popular Caribbean islands, Barbados is a great destination for everyone - including solo female travelers. If leaving the girls behind and planning a trip for one is what’s needed this season, grab those books off your TBR pile and book that plane ticket, stat! Barbados is full of welcoming locals, and it’s not just a pretty beach. So while we support all the lounging in the sun you could possibly need, don’t sleep on venturing out to explore the island’s culture and history. Explore the capital city of Bridgetown - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, take a guided tour through Harrison’s Cave, visit a number of historical sites and buildings from when Barbados was a British colony, or check out the energetic nightlife.

Big Sur Road Trip, California

Now that Route 1 is fully open along the California coast, there’s never been a better time to finally take that bucket list road trip. If you have a bit more time to play with, drive up from San Diego to Santa Rosa (further if you can!) for the complete experience. For shorter trips, Los Angeles to San Francisco will provide some of the best views of the Southern, Central, and Northern California coasts. A bit of a misconception about Big Sur, it’s not one specific location but rather a particularly picturesque and rugged 100-mile span of the California coast from San Simeon to Carmel. The Highway 1 road trip has been a bucket list for many people and will continue to be for good reason. The stunning ocean views, rugged cliffs, and redwood forests make it a one-of-a-kind experience. Slowly drive up the coast and witness how the coastline changes. Stay at local bed and breakfasts, dine at local cafes, and wander off the beaten path to check out the long-standing art community.

Brooklyn, New York

Plan a trip to Brooklyn in late April to see the Cherry Blossoms. Hanami Nights takes place at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, featuring live performances for a unique spring activity away from Manhattan. Brooklyn is our favorite NYC borough. While the high-traffic areas can be busy, it’s overall a much quieter part of New York with a slower pace. The buildings are gorgeous, and there’s much to explore when walking through the neighborhoods. Browse the Brooklyn Flea Market or Bushwick Market, both open year-round and featuring hundreds of artists, makers, and artisans. You never know what little treasures you’ll find. Visit a bookstore dedicated to food; Archestratus is a bookshop specializing in cookbooks that also serves as a local market. Stop at The Ripped Bodice, the first dedicated romance bookstore in New York City. Grab a photo opp at the view of the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO, and go for a walk along the East River for great views of the Manhattan skyline. Whether it’s your first time visiting NYC or you’re practically a regular by now, Brooklyn has plenty to offer all on its own for a city-centric spring trip.

Lake Como, Italy

Shoulder season is one of the best times to visit Lake Como, particularly in spring. The weather is mild, flowers are blooming, local ferries are back up and operating, and it’s quieter compared to peak times. Lake Como is Italy’s third-largest lake, located in the foothills of the Alps outside of Milan, with a unique shape resembling three branches or an upside-down“Y”. There are over 30 main towns and villages along Lake Como, most of which are well-connected through a ferry season that is not only convenient but incredibly scenic. While slowing down is an unwritten rule in Lake Como, make time to amble through local villages, walk along the lakefront, indulge in local cuisine - something that Italy is no stranger to, and fully embrace la dolce vita.

Mallorca, Spain

For an island getaway with European charm, Mallorca is the spot for you. It’s also a budget-friendly option if stretching a dollar is a priority. Spring in Mallorca is a beautiful time to visit, with fewer crowds and milder weather, ideal for exploring small towns and outdoor activities like biking and hiking. See historical landmarks like La Seu in Palma’s Old Town, a sandstone Gothic cathedral that took nearly 400 years to build, or take a road trip and hike to Puig Major, the island’s highest mountain peak and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spring is also festival season in Mallorca, with events like the Mallorca Live Festival, featuring an impressive line-up of familiar names such as David Guetta, the Wombats, and Cypress Hill. Sample wine at the Pollença Wine Fair or send off spring with Nit de Foc, a festival kicking off the summer solstice in June.

San Antonio, Texas

Texas has many great places to visit in spring - and it happens to be our favorite time of year to visit the massive state. Each city in Texas has its own personality, but San Antonio stands out in particular. It has an almost tropical feeling to it that lends a more exotic vibe to your visit. Visit historic sites, explore a diverse culinary scene, and get to know the friendly locals. A few of our top picks for San Antonio include exploring the Riverwalk and spending time in the Pearl District. It’s in the Pearl that you’ll find Hotel Emma and the restaurant Supper. Make sure to take advantage of the river taxi, look into live music events happening in the Pearl District, and don’t forget to check out the Alamo.

Savannah, Georgia

Spring is a beautiful time to visit Savannah. The city is in bloom, leaning into its enchanting quality rather than its haunted vibes. Pink azaleas cover the city, including Bonaventure Cemetery. It’s a beautiful time of year to explore on foot, when the weather is mild and not the stifling, humid heat that summertime brings. Enjoy Savannah’s vibrant cafe culture, take a day trip to Tybee Island, and walk through each city square. Shop along Broughton Street, venturing into unique businesses like The Paris Market and Le Cafe Gourmet. Stay at The Marshall House and share a room with a friendly ghost. Visit one of the many museums, like the Telfair Academy, home to the famous “Bird Girl” statue. Whether traveling alone or with friends, Savannah in the spring is the perfect destination to enjoy welcoming southern hospitality for a long weekend away.

Tulum, Mexico

One more tropical destination to consider for a spring getaway - Tulum! Located on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, Tulum is known for its white-sand beaches, calm blue waters, and palm trees. The ultimate destination for rest and relaxation, Tulum is a small, walkable town with plenty to explore outside its picturesque beaches. Explore the Mayan ruins, tour one of the many natural sites, such as cenotes (freshwater pools formed by sinkholes), or simply walk around taking in the many murals. Wellness is a large part of Tulum’s culture. If you’re looking to stay somewhere focused on well-being, there are many options to choose from, both near the beach and the jungle.
