The high season of summer begins to die down in September, with cooler temperatures blowing in and crowds lessening. October begins the peak of whale watching season, and the beaches offer a quiet, secluded retreat from the busy nature of daily life. It’s the perfect opportunity to unplug and slow down. Reset by reconnecting with nature, spending time listening to the waves of the ocean, and walking an unending, rugged coastline with spectacular views and breathtaking sunsets. Innsbruck, Austria

Located less than two hours away from Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and France, Innsbruck is a destination all on its own. The Austrian city is often overlooked outside of peak winter months and used as a pitstop while taking the train to almost anywhere else. This historic city has colorful buildings, a 500-year-old town center, local cuisine not to be missed, and much more. It’s the perfect combination of history, culture, and adventure. Its location in the Alps makes it a winter destination for skiing. Still, outside the snowy months, there are plenty of other activities, including beautiful hikes as the leaves turn colors. A pedestrian-friendly grand boulevard features restaurants, shops, and sidewalk cafes for leisurely afternoons exploring the town, and a multitude of historic buildings take visitors back in time. La Rioja Region, Spain

If you love Rioja wine, why not head to the Rioja region of Spain during harvest season? Visiting La Rioja in late autumn is the perfect opportunity to soak in the beautiful colors of the season and participate in the grape harvest. The weather is also much milder, which makes spending time outdoors much more enjoyable. Visit towns like Logrono, a mid-size city known for pinxtos, with a Baroque-style Cathedral and a museum that teaches the region’s history dating back to before the Roman Empire. Step back in time by visiting the Church of San Bartolome, which dates back to the 12th century with its earliest construction in the Romanesque style and Gothic elements from its completion in the 13th century. Or head to Haro, the capital of La Rioja, for a more charming small-town experience. The historic center takes visitors back to medieval times with centuries-old architecture and religious sites representing multiple eras of architectural styles and design, including Renaissance and Baroque. Haro is also home to the Museum of Wine and Vine, focusing on the history of oenology (winemaking) in the region.
